On 27 March 2019, at its ordinary meeting, Bellingen Shire Council formally declared a climate emergency. The declaration makes a call to urgently reduce carbon emissions across all of society, both locally and globally.

In response to the climate emergency, council has developed a draft Climate Emergency Response Framework (the Framework) that outlines how Council will work with the community to act on the climate emergency in as fast and effective a way as possible.

The Framework identifies three key documents.

1. Corporate Carbon Plan - draft available here for comment

2. Community Carbon Plan - to be developed

3. Adaptation Plan - to be developed

Note: The Corporate Carbon Plan has been drafted and is included here for public comment. This is the council's organisational plan i.e. it only covers the emissions from council's organisational operations. Broader community emissions will be considered in the Community Carbon Plan which is yet to be developed. There will be significant community engagement in the development of the Community Carbon Plan.
