Your comments are sought on a proposal for a major sculpture to be placed in an elevated position above Hickory Street between the Community Centre and the middle of the street.
A concept design for the proposed major sculpture in Dorrigo is being exhibited for community consultation generally. The sculpture is being funded by a local philanthropist who has generously offered to gift it as a work of public art for the community. The artist’s concept design can be viewed at the libraries in Dorrigo, Bellingen and Urunga, online at Council’s Create consultation forum and at Council administration building.
The concept design called ‘Water Cloud” by renowned public artist Stuart Green, was selected as the best design after being assessed by a selection panel made up of the local philanthropist, the President of Dorrigo Chamber of Commerce and artist Peter Mortimore, Arts Council of the Dorrigo President and artist Richard Rees, award winning local sculptor Sandra Pitkin, award winning local visual artist Chris Hundt, and the Mayor of Bellingen Shire Dominic King.
The public art designers needed to provide a design that would:
Provide a visual attraction for pedestrians and motorists
Contribute to social sustainability and town activation
Visually communicate the commemorate stories of the Shire
Display high quality fabrication techniques and craftsmanship
It is also proposed that the artwork be elevated above Hickory Street to provide a dramatic element and high visibility from multiple vantage points. This was the type of sculpture envisaged in Council’s 2014 Public Art plan. The design includes lighting to enable the sculpture to be seen at night.
A photo of the envisaged sculpture at night is included to provide one view of the proposed artwork.
Please note, the community consultation period has now been extended until Monday 13 January at 10am.
