On 27 November 2019, at its ordinary meeting, Bellingen Shire Council resolved to place the draft Bellingen Shire Biodiversity Strategy on public exhibition for a period of 42 days.

Biodiversity is the cornerstone of living systems. It is the variability among living organisms and is needed in order to maintain basic ecosystem functions such as clean air and water, and food availability. It is also key in adapting to climate change. Greater species and ecosystem diversity create greater resilience, and improved chances of adaptation to changing temperatures, weather events and seasonal patterns.

The Bellingen Shire has a rich, biodiverse landscape from lowland rainforest to ancient Antarctic beech, and is home to a range of threatened species. In order to improve the long term management of our biodiversity values a draft biodiversity strategy has now been developed.

The draft strategy outlines the strategic framework for biodiversity management, threats to biodiversity in our shire, and opportunities for Council and community.

Council would like your feedback. The draft is available for download from the Documents section of this page or in hard copy at Council's customer service centre and libraries. Submissions can be made as outlined below.
